‘One’ is a piece taken from Cordula Marks-Venters, work in progress, illustrated novel: Beyond the Half-Dead Stream. The story follows Isa Raichenhall and Leoni Stein — an impossible couple in 1930s Bavaria.
The artwork depicts the emotions of Isa when Leoni mysteriously disappears. Cordula writes that she wished the artwork to depict, “the deep connection between the two women.”
Beyond the Half-Dead Stream is the story of Isa’s search for Leoni, the terrifying obstacles she must overcome and the (sometimes rather peculiar) people and creatures she meets on her way. The book is a collaboration between Cordula and her partner, writer Kirsty Venters-Marks.
Cordula is an artist and illustrator working in Edinburgh, but with roots in Germany – where she was born and developed her love for forests and their unique mythology. She has many fascinations which are reflected in her work. Her love of nature and history, combined with a passion for fantasy and mythology inspired the idea for the illustrated novel project Beyond the Half-Dead Stream.
